Friends of the Library (FOTL) are volunteers who support the Huntington Beach Public Library through volunteer work, membership, donations, fund-raising activities and by encouraging gifts, endowments, and bequests to the Library.
Friends of the Huntington Beach Public Library (FOTL) is a volunteer, member supported, non profit organization that raises funds to focus public attention on the library, enrich the libraries collection of books, digital and other resources; and to develop and expand innovative education programs, library services and community outreach.
Money raised by the Friends through memberships, donations, gift shop sales, used books sales, and fundraising events provides approximately $250,000 yearly for the Huntington Beach Public Library (HBPL). Here are some of the important library services and programs these funds support:
Equally important, the Friends support the library volunteer program. In 2019 volunteer hours totaled over 56,000, which is the equivalent to 27 full-time employees. This volunteer contribution provides a combined annual savings of nearly $1,300,000 to the City of Huntington Beach.
Covering all five branches of the HBPL, volunteers operate the Friends Gift Shop and Used Books Store, coordinate online books sales, marketing, public relations, the quarterly Newsletter, social media posts, develop, conduct and provide hospitality programs and special events.
